How it works
Volume = area x thickness. Weight = volume x density (145 lb/cu ft default). Tonnage = weight / 2000 (or /1000 for metric tonnes).
Tips
- Compact depth shrinks ~25% from loose — measure the compacted depth.
- Add shoulder/edge waste for irregular shapes.
- Ask the plant for superpave density if you have a spec.
Limitations
Tonnage is estimated at nominal density; real weights vary with mix design and compaction.

How many tons of asphalt for a typical driveway?
A 10 ft x 40 ft driveway at 3 inches of asphalt is about 1200 sq ft x 0.25 = 300 cu ft, which is ~11 tons of hot mix. Enter your numbers for accuracy.

Hot-mix asphalt averages about 145 lb/cu ft (2320 kg/m³). The calculator lets you adjust.
Does thickness include binder and wearing course?
The calculator treats the total compacted lift thickness. For multi-layer designs, enter each lift and add them.
