Gravel Calculator
Estimate gravel, crushed stone or topsoil by area and depth. Tons and cubic yards/meters.
How to use this tool
- Enter length and width of the area.
- Select the depth.
- Pick a material (or set custom density).
- Add wastage and cost per unit.
- Calculate cubic yards/meters and tons.
How it works
Volume = length x width x depth. Weight = volume x material density. Standard gravel density ≈ 1.4 t/cu yd (1682 kg/m³).
Tips
- Order 5% extra so the base compacts to the right depth.
- Account for wheel ruts in driveways by leveling first.
- Pea gravel and crushed stone have slightly different densities.
Limitations
Density varies by moisture and stone type — use the supplier's density if known.
Frequently asked questions
How much gravel do I need for a 10x20 ft area at 3 inches deep?
10 x 20 = 200 sq ft; at 3 in that's 50 cu ft ≈ 1.85 cu yd ≈ 2.6 tons of gravel (at 1.4 t/cu yd). Enter your numbers to compute exactly.
How is gravel weight converted?
Gravel density is roughly 1.4–1.7 tons per cubic yard (1.68–2.0 t/m³). The calculator lets you adjust density.
Should I round up?
No — but adding 5% for compaction and spreading loss is wise. The calculator has a wastage field.
