Steel Weight Calculator
Find the weight of steel bars, plates, pipes and angles.
How to use this tool
- Choose the shape: round bar, square bar, plate/sheet, pipe, or angle.
- Enter the dimensions in your preferred unit.
- Set steel grade density.
- Calculate weight for the total length/count you need.
How it works
For each shape, the cross-section area is computed, multiplied by length and by density. Round bar: πr². Plate: w x t. Pipe: π(R² − r²). Result is converted to your chosen mass unit.
Tips
- Use mill tolerance — actual weight can vary a few percent.
- For bundled purchase, add 5% wastage for handling and cutting.
Limitations
Nominal dimensions may differ slightly from actual rolled sizes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the density of steel?
Carbon (mild) steel is 7850 kg/m³ (0.2836 lb/in³). Stainless steel is about 7930 kg/m³. The calculator defaults to 7850 and lets you change it.
How is round bar weight calculated?
Weight = cross-section area (π r²) x length x density. Area in mm² x length in m x 7.85 g/cm³ gives grams.
Does it include pipe wall thickness?
Yes — for pipe, area is the ring between outer and inner diameter, so wall thickness matters.
